The two manta sites
Manta Point & Manta Alley, explained
Komodo has two famous manta sites. We run trips to both - which one suits you depends on your dates, the swell and whether you snorkel or dive.
Manta Point
The classic cleaning station in the northern channels - reliable mantas, great for snorkellers and divers alike.
Manta Point →Manta Alley
A southern site near Rinca where mantas funnel through a narrow channel - a favourite of experienced divers.
Manta Alley →Manta Snorkelling
No certification needed - mantas often cruise just below the surface, ideal for first-timers and families.
Snorkel trips →Manta Diving
Two-tank dives for certified divers who want to hover with the mantas at the cleaning station.
Dive trips →Manta + Padar + Pink Beach
The most-loved day: the mantas plus Padar's viewpoint and Pink Beach in one speedboat trip.

When the mantas show up
Reef mantas visit Komodo's cleaning and feeding stations all year, but density and water clarity change with the season. The wet-season months (roughly December to February) bring plankton blooms that draw feeding mantas in numbers; the dry season trades some manta density for calmer seas and clearer water. We read the tides and the swell for your exact dates and tell you, honestly, what to expect.
- Peak manta numbers. Broadly Dec-Feb, when plankton blooms bring feeding aggregations.
- Calmest, clearest water. Through the dry season - better for photography and nervous swimmers.
- Current matters. Manta Point can run a current; divers are matched to the right site and timing.
- Tide-planned days. We aim for slack water and an early arrival ahead of the crowds.
Manta etiquette
How we keep it good for the mantas
Manta rays are gentle, curious and easily disturbed. Get it wrong and they leave the site; get it right and they keep returning for years. Every one of our trips runs to the same simple rules, and we brief every guest before they enter the water.
The manta rules
- Never touch or ride a manta
- Keep around 3 m distance
- Never chase or block their path
- No flash, small groups, follow your guide

Manta Point Komodo - FAQ
Where is Manta Point in Komodo?
Manta Point sits in the channels of Komodo National Park, reached by speedboat from Labuan Bajo in roughly 2-3 hours each way. It is a cleaning and feeding station where reef manta rays gather to glide over the reef. There is also a second famous site, Manta Alley, further south near Rinca. We run both snorkel and dive trips there.
Can you guarantee I will see manta rays?
No honest operator can guarantee wild manta sightings - mantas are free-swimming animals and conditions vary by day, tide and season. That said, sightings at Manta Point and Manta Alley are common in the right months, and your odds are highest in the core season. We tell you honestly what to expect for your dates rather than overselling.
What is the best time to see mantas in Komodo?
Mantas can appear year-round, but the most reliable window is broadly December to February (wet-season plankton blooms bring feeding mantas) and the calm, clear months of the dry season. We help you pick the best time for your trip and explain the trade-offs between visibility and manta density.
Should I snorkel or dive with the mantas?
Both work. Snorkelling is open to everyone - no certification needed - and mantas often cruise just below the surface, so you can have a superb encounter with a mask and fins. Diving suits certified divers who want to hover at the cleaning station; note Manta Point can have current, so it is best for divers with some experience.
Is it ethical to swim with wild manta rays?
Yes, when it is done responsibly. The rules are simple: do not touch or chase the mantas, keep a respectful distance (around 3 metres), never block their path, and follow your guide. We brief every guest before entering the water and run small groups so the animals are not crowded. Healthy, undisturbed mantas keep returning - that is good for them and for future visitors.
