Three forces, pulling differently

If you understand these, the month-by-month advice stops looking arbitrary.

Monsoon and wind

The northwest monsoon brings the wet season and the chop. The southeast trades bring the dry season and calmer central-park water.

Plankton density

Wet-season blooms are what pull mantas onto the surface to feed. Denser plankton means more animals and less visibility, in the same water.

Swell exposure

Central-park Manta Point is sheltered. Manta Alley, on the exposed south side, catches ocean swell and cooler upwelling the central channel never sees.

How far ahead to book

Peak stretch is December to February, and that is also when Labuan Bajo is fullest. Boats with good crews fill first, and the cheapest shared departures fill last but sell out hardest.

If your dates are fixed inside the peak, book early enough that you are choosing an operator rather than taking whoever is left. That matters more here than the boat itself.

If you have schedule flexibility, build in a spare day. One rough-weather morning is enough to move a manta stop, and a second day turns that from a lost trip into an inconvenience.
