A speedboat crossing open water in Komodo National Park

Plan · Getting there

Boat only, and there is no ferry

Fly into Komodo Airport, transfer ten to fifteen minutes to the harbour, then one to one and a half hours by speedboat. There is no land access and no scheduled public service.

Ask about departures

In short

Every route is airport, harbour, boat. Speedboat is 1–1.5 hours each way; a traditional wooden boat is 3–4. Nothing scheduled runs to the site because there is nothing there to run to.

  • No road, no ferry terminal, no land crossing
  • Morning departures beat afternoon ones
  • Park fee is separate from the boat fare

The route

Airport to reef

Four legs. Only the third one is long.

  1. 01

    Komodo Airport (LBJ)

Most travellers connect through Bali. Denpasar to Labuan Bajo is about 520 km and just over an hour in the air.

  2. 02

    Harbour transfer

Two and a half to four kilometres, ten to fifteen minutes by car. Allow twenty when several flights land together.

  3. 03

    The crossing

One to one and a half hours by speedboat, up to two in rough sea. Three to four hours on a traditional wooden boat or phinisi.

  4. 04

    Arrival is a drift

No jetty, no buoy. The boat slows over the plateau and the guide briefs the group before anyone enters.

A multi-stop day that calls at Padar or Pink Beach first may not reach the mantas until two or three hours after leaving. That is itinerary time, not crossing time.

Bring

For the boat and the site

Operators supply gear. These are the things people wish they had.

Reef-safe sunscreen
Mineral, non-nano
Applied before you board, not on the reef
Rash guard
Long sleeve
Better sun cover than cream, and warmer
Dry bag
Small
Deck spray reaches everything on a speedboat
Motion sickness tablets
Taken early
An hour before boarding, not when you feel it
Cash
Small notes
Not every jetty or kiosk takes cards
SiOra booking
Confirmed
Ask whether the operator has done it

Morning departures get calmer water and better light. Afternoon crossings into a building sea are the ones people remember for the wrong reason.

Questions about getting there

Get on the right boat

Send Komodo Luxury your dates and whether you have a flight to catch. That one detail decides speedboat or slow boat more than anything else.
