Stay with the guide
The site is open water with no wall to hold. Separation is the real hazard, not depth. Keep the group compact and the contour in sight.

Eight to eighteen metres over Karang Makassar, with the busiest cleaning band at ten to fifteen. Open Water is enough on a normal day, and the tide does the swimming.
Book a dive dayA drift dive at a shallow plateau in central Komodo National Park where reef mantas hold at cleaning stations year round. Most operators accept Open Water certification given the manageable depth and current.
The dive
The same figures this site publishes everywhere else.
Past the plateau edge, sand channels drop beyond 20 m. That ground exists, but manta-focused dives do not use it.
The dive plan
A dive trip is structured differently from a sightseeing day, and the difference is the point.
Entry is planned on the tide table, not the clock. That is why a dive boat may leave earlier or later than a sightseeing boat going to the same place.
Current direction, the reef contour to follow, separation procedure and where the group ends. Hand signals confirmed before anyone kits up.
You descend onto the plateau and drift the contour, staying compact. Cleaning stations are fixed points; you pass them rather than park on them.
Surface marker up, boat comes to the group. A dive boat expects a spread-out surfacing and plans the pickup for it.
Two to three dives is normal on a dedicated day, usually the manta plateau plus a reef-scenery site for contrast.

If you have one dive day out of Labuan Bajo, it is Manta Point. Manta Alley is a trip you build a schedule around.
Nothing exotic. The things that actually go wrong here are ordinary.
The site is open water with no wall to hold. Separation is the real hazard, not depth. Keep the group compact and the contour in sight.
Never above the animal, never head-on, never over a station a manta is using. A blocked pass is the one behaviour that costs the site.
Ambient light reaches this depth easily. A strobe near the animals buys you nothing and costs everyone else the encounter.
Surface marker buoys and a briefed pickup are standard here. If an operator does not mention either, ask why before you book.
The site itself, and the depth canon.
